Digital (Direct) radiography (DR) is an advanced nondestructive examination technique that exists as an alternative to both conventional and computed radiography. The image capturing process is similar to conventional radiography except that, instead of using an x-ray film, a digital image capture device is used. It can also be used for weld quality examinations with excellent results.
Digital radiography can be used to determine early signs of metal loss and points of weakness in insulated and uninsulated piping systems, pipelines, valves, among other types of equipment. Digital radiography has several advantages over computed radiography, including reduced exposure and processing time, enhanced image analysis, lower radioactive dosages, and the lack of involvement of chemicals. Compared to traditional (film) radiography there is no image degradation, storage needs are reduced, and the data can be transmitted electronically.
